I want to discuss the difference in the relationship between Mario and Luigi in the games vs in the movie universe. I mean, is their bond wholesome in both scenarios? Yes. Obviously. But there is a special closeness between Movie Mario and Luigi that I really need to ramble about. In the games, Mario was born into the world where he belongs– a world that needed a daring hero. One of his first acts was to go on an adventure to rescue his brother, even though he was a literal infant at that time. He hit the ground running the moment he gained consciousness, and hasn’t slowed down since. Everyone sees this heroism and determination, and admires him for it.
But in the Movie Verse, Mario is born into a lower-middle class family of blue collar workers in a world that doesn’t take well to reckless heroism. Bullheaded bravery is considered amusing at best, and an embarrassment at worst. There are no monsters to fight or princesses to save, there is only money to make and jobs to do, and Mario does his best to adapt.
In the games (the Mario & Luigi RPGs in particular) Mario doesn’t react to people disregarding or talking down to Luigi unless Luigi shows it bothers him, because, otherwise, I don’t think Mario even knows it hurts him. He probably thinks that surely Luigi knows his worth, and that there’s no use getting defensive over pointless nonsense when there’s more important things at stake. There is a lot of love between the brothers, but there is also the natural divide between someone who has fit in effortlessly his entire life, and someone who has been struggling desperately to keep up with him, just to get brushed aside because he doesn’t measure up in the eyes of the world.
Heroism doesn’t come easy to Luigi, but he does it anyways because he cares about his brother, and wants to do the right thing.
In both the games and the movie Luigi is an anxious, goofy, clumsy victim of continuous bad luck, whose kindness and good nature always shines through despite everything. He is deemed too gentle and nervous to fit in, an easy target who can be mistreated and pushed around without consequence… … unless, of course, Mario is there.
In the games, Mario will argue on behalf of his brother if it’s clear his feelings are hurt, but in the movie verse Mario is prepared to throw hands in a heartbeat the moment you disrespect Luigi, because that version of Mario knows what it’s like to be talked down to. He knows what it’s like to be brushed aside and belittled, he knows that whether you take it personally or not all those small insults wear you down over time, and he isn’t going to let anyone do that to his little brother.
On the flip side, Luigi is one of the few people who sees Mario for himself, and loves him for it. Though there are no monsters to fight or princesses to save (yet), Mario’s brashness helps Luigi stand up for himself… helps him move forward… balances him out. Luigi has always been the one person in this world who needed Mario to be as brave, bold, foolhardy, and heroic as he was.
Neither of them fit in, but they see each other and love each other for what everyone else has determined to be their weaknesses.
In the games, Mario can easily stand on his own because he’s being helped, uplifted, and supported by everyone and everything around him. In the movie? Luigi was, for the longest time, the only one who allowed him to truly be himself.

Opening shift
(Bowser and King Boo drinking together and complaining over their mustachioed nemeses)
KB: Come on, you have it easy. I've kidnapped the red Luigi plenty of times! He's hardly a threat!
Bowser: You trapped him in a painting as he's sleeping. That hardly counts! Try fighting Red when he's actually awake. Anyway, the green bean is so pathetic, he could hardly hold onto a powerup! Scared and shaking all the time! Just use that against him!
KB: You don't know what you're talking about. You try fighting him and see how much his fear doesn't hold him back! You'd find yourself trapped in a vacuum in record time!
Bowser: *laughing because even drunk he knows he can't be vacuumed up like a boo can*
(later, on his way home, a still drunk bowser decided he'll prove KB wrong and take care of the green Mario problem for him. Kidnaps Luigi in his sleep, because why hasn't KB tried that when that's how e traps nearly everyone else? stupid boo.)
(Meanwhile KB starts plotting a Bowser-style kidnapping of his own to lure Mario to one of his haunted locations for a fight to prove Bowser wrong. He makes his attack in the early morning (still dark out) when Mario is confused and lacking coffee) as to where his brother has disappeared to. KB and his boos attack the castle, startling Princess Peach as she is eating breakfast before getting an early start on her day. Capturing her in a painting, and leaving a few toads to run and inform Mario of what happened. The toads run to tell Luigi and Mario because they know Luigi is who you call for boo problems, but you call Mario for kidnapped Peach problems. but no one can find Luigi so Mario sets off alone to rescue Peach, planning to find out where Luigi is after. He borrows Luigi's boo hunting equipment and calls up Professor Gadd to get some quick lessons on how to use it all before he's off to save the princess.)
(Meanwhile at Bowser's castle things are not going the way Bowser expected (an easy fight) nor does it go the way it would if it was Mario. and oops, is Bowser catching feelings for the green one? oh.)
(Luigi returns home, a bit stunned that he has a date night planned with Bowser of all people. He's still trying to figure out how that happened. To find the toads all freaking out because KB kidnapped the Princess and Mario went after them with Luigi's stuff, but isn't back yet. So Luigi grabs his older poltergust from storage and goes to provide back-up, or straight up rescue them if Mario ended up in a painting. He arrives to find that actually, no, Mario is still standing, still fighting, sucking up boos and ghosts, though not as efficiently as Luigi could with all his experience in doing so. It's still clear to KB that he greatly underestimated the red one.)
Luigi: Doing great, bro! Just smack him around a bit to stun him when you have him caught! I'll let the Princess out!
(Mario does what his brother suggests and manages to capture KB himself as Peach is saved from the painting by Luigi and the three head home (after dropping off the captured boos to Gadd), talking about how strange it was that KB had made such a move. Also Luigi explaining why he hadn't been home that morning. Minus the date. he doesn't know how to get into that development...)
I better not hear any complaints when donation period comes around. OR ELSE.

EDIT: How do we show appreciation to the volunteers? For me reading these deep dives on OTW issues u guys apparently it's been said multiple times that one of their objective statements is to have paid staff for ao3 and there's a surplus of donations they haven't used up or the other community solutions that needs to address. For those more financially literate feel free to analyze, snipe me or add to the discussion etc. linked here by deepa. They’re cool and these yearly analysis they did aint no joke.
a 5 year old doodle I stumbled upon that made me go "hell yeah"
-18, any pronouns are cool- Honestly this just turned into a g/t account, I don't know how it happened. I like posting my art and I'll probably reblog stuff about Labor Unions/Workers rights every now and then, don't be afraid to interact or make art requests! I might not get to them very quickly, but I'm down to give em a shot. Glad to share my 3am monthly-hyperfixation-related drawings with y'all
